Delve into the realm of myths and legends with these fun DIY sets from Raven King Crafts. We felt the need to make some adorable chibi monsters, spirits and mythological creatures and here they are! Chibi Monsters, Legends and Mythological Beasts

There are a lot of legends and beasts in this set so here is a brief description of each character, the design for the ornament and the standing figure are the same illustration.

Coyote Ornament or Standing Figure

If you aren't familiar with Coyote he's a legendary Trickster and sometimes hero in many Native American stories. Unlike some of the Native American legends and monster designs Coyote is a legend in multiple tribes. His cunning and mischievous nature is used to help teach morals and lessons through the misadventures he gets into. Coyote is not only famous for his adventures but also for his sense of humor and in some Navajo tales created the Milky Way. His figurine is a chibi coyote with a leg band, some face paint and some feathers and beads. Coyote is a wonderful trickster and most of his stories are designed to teach children, so they've started being adapted into children's books.

Cthulhu Ornament or Standing Figure

This chibi is of the Cthulhu from a NON children's books series by Lovecraft. This classic horror series isn't as terrifying to us today as it was to readers when it first came out, but that is because it has become a foundation in the monster and horror story telling realm. With his wings and tentacles our Cthulhu chibi is going for cute rather than scary.

Da-jo-ji Ornament or Standing Figure

An Iroquois (Native American) legendary spirit of the west wind, the Da-jo-ji is a powerful spirit that looks like a large panther but can carry a whirlwind, blow flat a forest and toss the seas. It is a powerful elemental spirit and has a powerful roar before he brings in a storm. Our chibi version of has swirls to try to make it more elemental looking.

(Also known as Dajoji, or West Wind Cougar, or West Wind Panther)

Kelpie Ornament or Standing Figure

Our chibi Kelpie is based off the Irish mythological man-eating horse like creature to lures people to touch it and then drags them into the water to drown them. Our chibi Kelpie is going for cute rather than man eating.

Kitsune Ornament or Standing Figure

Our chibi Kitsune design is based off the Japanese mythological fox spirit with 9 tails. These spirits are supposed to be wise and shape shifters, sometimes acting as tricksters.

Minotaur Ornament or Standing Figure

This chibi is based on the Minotaur of Greek mythology. A bull / human hybrid that was kept in a labyrinth.

Nekomata Ornament or Standing Figure

Our chibi version of the Nekomata is just a cat with the split tail. The Nekomata is not a friendly spirit in Japanese mythology and can often be malicious in nature.

Spinx Ornament or Standing Figure

This Spinx chibi design is based off the Egyptian and Greek Spinx design where it is a lion and woman hybrid sometimes with wings. Normally this clever creature would have you solve riddles and can be a guardian.

Thunderbird Ornament or Standing Figure

Based off the Native American mythological bird our chibi is a large bird of prey with unnatural plumage and wings. The Thunderbird is able to drum up thunder with its wings and strike lightning, it fights the giant serpent beasts and is a prevalent protector in the lore of many different tribes.

Troll Ornament or Standing Figure

Our chibi troll is adorable with a little hat and shorts on. Based off the Nordic version of a troll.

Paint and marker style will vary. I try to include quality materials but please understand that this may mean a variety in the brand or colors if you order the same kit year after year. Markers are always ones I test to make sure they are washable and the acrylic paint pods have also been tested. While clean up is tested I do suggest you have kids immediately wash hands after they paint or color as it is easiest to clean up before it dries or soaks in more. Setting up a crafting friendly area is also a good idea. Using parchment paper that is paints taped down to a surface will help protect your surface. Paint brushes should be washed once use is done to ensure they are useable again. Paint pods should be shut firmly to make sure they don’t dry out. Makers should have their caps shut firmly to make sure they also don’t dry out.

Paint pods ship in plastic bag to protect your kit contents as well as other mail being processed. Please consider reusing this bag to store any art materials you don’t use the first time around.

When using stain, paint or a clear coat be sure to follow the instructions on the finish container. Always allow the finish to cure/dry completely before handing. If you plan to use these pieces in a humid area or out of doors look for an exterior finish. If the included paint or markers are used you may want to consider sealing the art with a clear coat, non-yellowing, acrylic spray. You can find those at in with the spray paint at most any art or hardware store but it is almost always cheaper at a hardware store.

When hanging your cat cutouts as a mobile I highly suggest Beadalon Supplemax Monofilament Illusion Cord. I normally use this in addition to small beads to help hold and hide my knots. When designing your mobile remember that it should be out of the reach of infants and toddlers who might otherwise pull it down on themselves. If you are using your cat wooden cut outs to craft wall décor you can use the same illusion cord. If using a branch as the support please remember to be careful when drilling your holes and to use the proper protection. If you don't want “live bark” on the branch you can also sand it and finish it (stain / paint) the same as your feline cut outs.

Be warned that if you use an outside product like a branch the finishing may not look exactly the same as it does on the kitten cut outs. These kits are great if you want to give someone a DIY cat themed baby mobile, or you want to hang up some cat themed wall art in your office / entry / cabin or living room. These kits are also great for kids (with adult supervision as small parts could be choking hazards) if they want a DIY décor craft or they want to make feline ornaments, cat magnets or tags in general. A great sit down activity!
