Material - Leather
These bookmarks are made out of handle selected veggie tan cow leather.
Why We Use Leather
- Leather lasts for years.
- Leather can be composted.
- Leather is durable, yet thin and flexible.
- Veggie tanned leather is tanned traditionally using plants.
- Leather is a byproduct of the meat industry and even if you don't eat meat many of our animal companions do. Rather than let anything go to waste we stand by the First Nation tradition of using all of the parts of an animal if it is killed.
- Leather is a traditional First Nation medium and our artist grew up using it since her parents are both registered tribal members.
Materials We Avoid
We are always looking for other durable yet compostable materials. We are following plant based leathers but at this time have not found one that doesn't contain plastic or resin.
- Synthetic leathers (faux leather) when engraved release toxic fumes
- Acrylic when engraved also releases toxic fumes
